Mitchell Fox Wins PGA of Alberta Championship Title

CALGARY — Mitchell Fox, of Speargrass Golf Club, captured his first Cobra Puma Mobilicab PGA of Alberta Championship on Thursday, birdieing the first playoff hole at Water Valley Golf Club to secure the title over defending champion Wes Heffernan.
Fox entered the final round with a one-shot lead and backed it up with a 3-under-par 69, finishing at 10-under through 36 holes with rounds of 65-69. But the defending champion refused to go away.
Heffernan (Dynamic Motion Golf Performance Centre) began the day four shots off the pace before charging back with a sizzling 7-under-par 65. He made birdies on each of his final two holes to pull even with Fox at 10-under par and force a playoff.
“I looked at the leaderboard a bit. I got off to the good start. I pulled it on the first hole for eagle, but when you have Eric, Dillon, Wes behind chasing you – ya know one of the three guys is going to go low. I kind of came into the day thinking that I’d have to get to 11 or 12 knowing one of those guys would go low 60s, and of course Wes did. I was happy to get him in the playoff,” added Fox.
The championship was decided quickly.
Returning to the first hole, Fox made birdie to secure the win.
“I was a little nervous. It is always tough playing against Wes,” said Fox. “I hit a good drive, hit a bit of a safe second shot. I got lucky Wes caught a bit of a flier and hit it over the green so that I could lag my putt up and I was fortunate to make my birdie there.”
Fox’s final round got off to a fast start with an eagle, and he added four birdies to offset a double bogey on his way to a 69.
Heffernan, meanwhile, put together one of the best rounds of the two-day event, recording eight birdies against just one bogey. His closing 65 gave him a two-day total of 69-65, but Fox’s birdie in the playoff proved to be the difference.
With the victory, Fox adds his name to the list of PGA of Alberta Championship winners, earning the title in dramatic fashion at Water Valley Golf Club.
