Craig Gibson Wins PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada
PGA of Canada News

Craig Gibson Wins PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada

When Sirocco Golf Club Head Professional Craig Gibson stood on the 16th tee on Thursday afternoon, he trailed by four strokes.

That left just three holes to make up those four strokes on his playing partner, Rob Tadey, who entered the day with a one-stroke lead at the PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf and supported by G&G Brands.

Oh yah; he also trailed Stephen Cox by four strokes; who was about to tee off on No. 18 at about the same time Gibson was hitting his tee shot on the par 3 16th at Verrado Golf Club just outside Phoenix, AZ.

Peeking at the leaderboard around this time, Gibson knew he needed something special to happen if he was going to stamp his name in PGA of Canada championship history.

The next half hour you almost had to see to believe:

2:34 PM: Gibson nails 30-foot birdie putt on 16 to move to -9, trialing Cox and Tadey by 3.

2:45 PM: Cox hits his second on the par-5 18th short left of the green into the desert, takes an unplayable lie and moves backwards on-line with the pin up a 30-foot, 45-degree grade hill to take a drop in (less dense) desert, ending up with a bogey to finish at -11, one back of Tadey.

2:47 PM: Gibson hits it to an inch on No. 17 to move to -10.

2:55 PM: With a one-stroke lead, Tadey hits his approach shot left, losing his ball in the desert, and makes a double bogey with his provisional to finish at -10.

3:05 PM: Gibson hits a tidy chip to kick-in length for birdie on 18 to finish at -11.

Gibson vs. Cox playoff.

Four playoff holes later, Gibson fought back tears on the 18th green after making his fourth birdie on the hole of the day.

The six-footer he made on his 22nd hole of the day wasn’t just for him – not this time – but also for his wife and baby daughter at home, 2,500 km away.

“I can’t wait to take a picture of Georgia [his daughter] and the trophy,” said Gibson, who celebrated Georgia’s first birthday alongside his wife Courtney just weeks before making the trek to Verrado Golf Club. “It’s special. I started to kiss my ball marker with her name on it, so this one, it is awesome.”

Gibson was stellar all week long, firing 66-68-71 to finish on top at the final PGA of Canada national championship of the season.

Congratulations to the following Professionals from Alberta for all finishing inside the top 25 at the Championship:

Fox Retains Lead and Heffernan Fires Course Record at PGA Assistants’ Championship

Following up on an eight-birdie 66 on Monday, Kevin Stinson of British Columbia was quick out of the gate during the second round, making five birdies in his opening seven holes to take the lead from Mitchell Fox. However, a flurry from Fox late in the round, as he did during the first round, gave Fox the lead right back.

“It felt good today, no bogeys and no holes where I had a chance to make bogey, it was cleaner today and I seem to like those last six holes,” said Fox, in reference to the final six holes which he has played 8-under par over the course of the past two days, including an eagle on 17 each round.

For the full leaderboard from the second round of the PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf, click here.

“I hit driver and had 270 yards to the pin in the back and had 60 feet and made it from there. A little different from yesterday,” laughed Fox, who hit it to a foot on the hole during round one.

The Inter-Zone Championship wrapped up after the second round, with the Alberta squad claiming the event for the second time in as many years – this time by 11 strokes.

The team consisting of: Wes Heffernan, Mitchell Fox, Jared Nicolls and Michael Harrison managed to beat Quebec by 11 strokes.

Along with the leader, Fox, team member Heffernan played a large part in the team’s victory, firing a course-record 63 on Tuesday.

“It was one of those rounds where Kevin (Stinson) got off to such a hot start so right away I was five, six or seven behind him,” said Heffernan. “I had to get going so I made an eagle on No. 5 and played the par fives six under, which helps things, and I made a few putts coming in, and signing for a 63 is pretty cool.”

The final round of the PGA Assistant’s Championship of Canada is today (September 14th). Click the above link to follow the live scoring.

Wes Heffernan Victorious at the 100th Playing of the PGA Championship of Canada
PGA of Canada News

Wes Heffernan Victorious at the 100th Playing of the PGA Championship of Canada

On Friday afternoon (June 24th) at Beacon Hall GC, Wes Heffernan put a bow on a dominant performance at the PGA Championship of Canada, going wire-to-wire to cement himself as the winner of the 100th anniversary of the event by a margin of five strokes, shooting scores of 68-69-69-72 to do so.

Full Results and Purse Breakdown can be seen here

“I’m not sure it has sunk in yet. (Friday) was a challenging mental day with the lead and trying to keep that lead, but I played really well, which was very fulfilling,” said Heffernan, who came into the week as the top player on the PGA Player Rankings and takes home $12,000 with the victory. “I didn’t make any mistakes until the end, and I had a nice cushion by that point.”

It didn’t take long for those bearing witness to realize that there would be no coming back to the field for Heffernan on Friday.

Off the tee this week, Heffernan was impeccable. The only thing perhaps more impressive was his ball striking, as he gave himself good birdie look after good birdie look on the firm and fast Beacon Hall greens.

After knocking in a 12-foot birdie putt on the second hole, Heffernan cruised through the front nine with eight consecutive pars, with none of the par putts being further than three feet.

As Heffernan noted, a bogey followed by a double on 16 and 17 put a dent in his lead, but by that point, there was nothing between the 45-year-old and the first P.D. Ross trophy of his career.

“I know the tournament has had quite the history and there’s been some fantastic players at this event. I got to play with Jim Rutledge the past two days, who is a Canadian legend, and he is on the trophy as well,” said Heffernan – who’s five-stroke winning margin came over the runner-up Rutledge. “I was fortunate enough to share these past two rounds with him and I was fortune to come out on top.”

With the victory, Heffernan becomes the third-consecutive Albertan to win the event after Dustin Risdon’s victory in 2019 and Riley Fleming’s win last summer.

“I have a lot of great family and friends to thank back home for their support,” said Heffernan, who teaches out of the Dynamic Motion Golf Performance Center. “Some people thought it was only three rounds, so I actually got some congratulations texts yesterday, so I was happy to be able to get it done today”

While Heffernan turned in a score of 10-under par, only three other players were able to break par for the tournament – Rutledge, Gordon Burns, and Fleming. And while Heffernan broke 70 in three of the four rounds, no other player was able to do it more than twice – and the only player to do that was Fleming.

Other notable finishes by PGA of Alberta Professionals include:

Wes Heffernan Leads the Way after Second Round of the PGA Championship of Canada

Fresh off his RBC Canadian Open exemption, Wes Heffernan, the top ranked player on the PGA Player Rankings, broke 70 for the second consecutive day, firing a 3-under par 69 to put himself two strokes ahead of Jim Rutledge and Gord Burns.

While late in round one players were forced to battle the wind, yesterday it was near unprecedented heat and humidity. Players were reaching for as much BioSteel as they could as the ‘feels like’ reached 40-degrees Celsius at Beacon Hall Golf Club.

“I had to put my rain gloves on because I was sweating so much,” said Heffernan. “I struggled in the middle of the round and had two loose shots, one my hands slipped and the other I just wasn’t mentally feeling comfortable.”

Full leaderboard can be seen here

For the second-consecutive day, Heffernan, who is seeking the first PGA Championship of Canada victory of his career, played the back nine bogey free, once again playing the back side in just 33 strokes.

“I righted the ship to start the back nine, and even though I missed a few short ones that could have made it even better, I hit my lines and played just as solid as yesterday,” said the 2019 PGA Assistants’ Champion of Canada. “I feel like if I play well, I can always be in the mix, so to play solid and be leading is where I want to be and hopefully that’s where I can be the rest of the tournament.”

Other notable performances by PGA of Alberta Professionals so far include:

Final group for round three including Heffernan tees off at 10:40am MST today. Follow the action for the final two rounds on the leaderboard link above.

Wes Heffernan Set to Represent the PGA of Canada This Week at the RBC Canadian Open
PGA of Canada News

Wes Heffernan Set to Represent the PGA of Canada This Week at the RBC Canadian Open

4008 days; that will be the amount of time between Wes Heffernan’s final putt on Sunday at the 2011 US Open - his last tournament on the world’s biggest stage – to this Thursday, when he will strike his opening tee shot at the RBC Canadian Open.

Much like the #1 song on the Billboard Chart when he played his last PGA TOUR event, the Calgarian hopes to be ‘Rolling in the Deep’ this week at St. George’s Golf & Country Club in Toronto. We should specify; deep under-par, and not buried in the devastatingly deep rough players are set to face this week.

While many things have changed since June of 2011, a few things have remained the same: Heffernan’s silky-smooth swing and ever-steady composure. If he can settle in quickly, he will feel right at home.

“The hard part is going to be getting into that comfort level again, not just playing a tournament, but a PGA TOUR tournament, you can’t replicate that anywhere,” says Heffernan, who finished just one point ahead of fellow Calgarian Riley Fleming to earn the exemption. “It’s not the game that will be an issue, it’s getting into the right headspace as quickly as I can.

“You can hit 50 perfect shots on the range, but nothing will feel like that first tee shot on Thursday,” he added.

The PGA of Canada Points Ranking is based off the past three years of competition in PGA of Canada National Championships and select Zone events (2020 events did not count because of all National events being cancelled due to COVID-19). In that time, Heffernan has won two events and placed within the top-10 in 11 of the 12 tournaments.

Prior to this week, Heffernan says he has played this golf course one time – 22-years ago – “that isn’t going to help me much,” he says with a laugh.

However, following his arrival this past weekend, Heffernan joined old friend David Hearn for a round and has played 27 more holes at St. George’s over the past few days to get prepared. The course, he says, couldn’t be better.

“I can’t recall a golf course in better condition than this course, the fairways are some of the best ever,” says Heffernan. “Before this week I had only played six rounds this year, but we have a facility and it’s not like I haven’t been hitting golf balls the past six months. I’m just trying to get the short game in shape as quickly as possible.”

Heffernan is set to begin his opening round at 12:12pm MST on Thursday, with his second round following on Friday at 7:12am MST.

The Winston GC Set to Host PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada

100 of the country’s best Professional Golfers are set to play the fourth PGA of Canada National Championship of the season next week at The Winston Golf Club in Calgary.

Anticipation is at an all-time high as two years have passed since Wes Heffernan’s incredible final-round 64 at the 2019 Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf at TPC Toronto gave him a three-stroke win over Yohann Benson – both of whom are in the field in Calgary.

The Winston Golf Club lacks neither brawn nor beauty – and the championship may be decided on the difficult 225-yard island-green 17th hole. The course, which went through a massive re-design in 1992 at the hands of renowned architect Les Furber, proved to be a phenomenal test of golf when it previously hosted the Assistants’ Championship presented by Callaway Golf in 2018, when Marc-Etienne Bussieres posted a three-day mark of 15-under to claim a two-stroke win over our 2021 BetRegal PGA Championship of Canada winner Riley Fleming.

The event has a list of champions that includes some of the most well-respected golf professionals in the country. The full list of past champions can be found here.

Riley Fleming Stamps His Name on P.D. Ross Trophy as Winner of the PGA Championship of Canada

Saturday at Parcours du Vieux Village in Bromont, Quebec belonged to Riley Fleming.

From the time he made a 15-foot eagle putt on the fifth hole to break the deadlock between himself and Kevin Stinson to take the lead at the BetRegal PGA Championship of Canada presented by TaylorMade Golf and adidas Golf to the time he narrowly fought off water works on the 18th green with the P.D. Ross trophy in hand, the day was his, and the game is seldomly played as beautifully as Fleming played it this week.

The full leaderboard can be viewed here

“This is the biggest win of my career by far,” said Fleming, who pieced together rounds of 66-63-68-66 this week to win by three. “Kevin (Stinson) and I duked it out pretty good on the front, and even on the back, I was only one clear after 13, so it was pretty tight. I’m just so excited.”

While the 63 the pro from Lynx Ridge Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta managed on Thursday may have been his lowest number, Saturday’s 66 was arguably his most impressive.

With a one-stroke lead on the par-5 7th hole, Fleming made one of his only major mistakes of the week – hitting his tee shot right, where it landed out-of-bounds. After striking his provisional perfectly down the center, a long-way down the center, I may add, his demeanour was unflustered, and he only sacrificed a single shot.

The 8th hole at Parcours de Vieux Village presents an interesting option for players. At only 330-yards and slightly downhill, it is certainly drivable, but with a pond guarding the right side, Fleming, who “is almost always against laying up,” as he told us after his round, took iron off the tee early in the week.

This was not the case on Saturday. Fleming, with thoughts of his wayward drive on seven nonexistent, made a winning decision and drove the green. Birdie for Fleming and bogey for Stinson, erasing the blemish from the seventh and adding even more cushion between himself and the PGA of BC pro. He never looked back and didn’t relinquish his lead for the remainder of the tournament.

By the time Fleming strolled down the 18th fairway, he had given himself a three-shot cushion. The scene could have been from a movie, (and the scene of Fleming walking towards the green with the Bromont faithful encircling him was like a tamed-down version of Tiger Woods at the 2018 FedEx Cup Finals) as Fleming buried a 35-footer for birdie and put his hands in the air.

“The crowd was so friendly and supportive, even cheering on the Alberta guy,” said Fleming, who takes home $10,000 with the win. “It was so much fun to see them there and our group hit some really good shots today so hopefully they enjoyed it as much as we did.”

His caddie, Chad Thompson, who booked his own ticket to Montreal to be there for his friend (and, little did he know, a moment of Canadian golf history), gave him a big bear hug.

When asked how it felt to have his name alongside Lee Trevino, Moe Norman and Arnold Palmer on the P.D. Ross trophy, Fleming fought back tears.

“It’s hard to believe… it’s pretty cool to have my name on a trophy with Arnold,” he said.

PGA Scramble Moves Forward with Alternative Finale Plans

The RBC PGA Scramble presented by The Lincoln Motor Company announced today the cancellation of its national final, originally scheduled from Oct. 4-6 at Cabot Cape Breton in Inverness, N.S.

The decision comes as a result of ongoing travel restrictions associated with the Atlantic bubble, the recent extension of Nova Scotia’s state of emergency and continued health concerns surrounding COVID-19 across the country.

The program announced its backup plans in June, committing to a decision on the national final’s fate prior to the start of regionals.

“The safety and well-being of everyone involved in the program continues to be our top priority,” said Mary DePaoli, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, RBC.  “In conjunction with our partners, we have made the decision to move forward with our alternative plans given the information available at this time. While we share in the disappointment of players, we are pleased to proceed with an enhanced and unique regional experience for all participants.”

As a result of the cancellation, the RBC PGA Scramble presented by The Lincoln Motor Company will move forward with enhanced regional events featuring over $150,000 CAD worth of gifting and prizing including a draw prize for two nights’ accommodation and two rounds of golf at Cabot Cape Breton for one lucky team.

PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada Cancelled

Given ongoing restrictions and uncertainty related to COVID-19, the PGA of Canada has cancelled the 2020 PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada, originally scheduled for Aug. 4-7 at Le Parcours du Vieux Village in Bromont, Que.

The national championship will return to Vieux Village in 2021, though dates for next year have yet to be confirmed.

The PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada was first conducted in 1938 as part of the PGA Championship of Canada before evolving into a stand-alone tournament in 1973. This is the first time since 1946 the event will not be contested.

The PGA of Canada continues to actively review its national championship schedule for the remainder of the season. To date, the Association has cancelled the DCM PGA Women’s Championship and postponed the PGA Championship of Canada presented by TaylorMade Golf Canada and adidas Golf as a result of the pandemic.

Should a national event take place in the fall, the PGA of Canada plans to designate a category within the championship to provide senior members with an opportunity to compete.

PGA Championship of Canada Postponed

The 2020 PGA Championship of Canada has been postponed after careful consideration from the PGA of Canada and lead sponsors TaylorMade Golf Canada and adidas Golf.

In addition, the PGA of Canada has decided to pause its player rankings for 2020 given the uncertain impact of COVID-19 on events across the country.

“There is no denying this is an unpredictable year for professional tournaments,” said Adam LeBrun, managing director of championships and foundation at the PGA of Canada. “Given the uncertain nature of inter-provincial travel and other restrictions due to COVID-19, we felt it was prudent to postpone the championship and pause the association’s player rankings this year."

The PGA Championship of Canada presented by TaylorMade Golf Canada and adidas Golf was scheduled for July 6-10 at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alta.

Due to scheduling conflicts, Royal Mayfair is unable to host the tournament later in the season but has stated they are eager to work with the PGA of Canada to see the event return in the near future.

“We are disappointed we will not have the opportunity to host the association’s top professionals this year, but we fully support the PGA of Canada’s decision to postpone the event," said Royal Mayfair’s director of golf Matthew Johnson. "It is our hope to return as a host venue for this prestigious championship in the near future."

The PGA of Canada and its partners continue to monitor COVID-19 developments across the country and will evaluate all opportunities to see the championship contested later in the season.

PGA of Canada Launches Deferred Education Payment Plan

PGA of Canada Launches Deferred Education Payment Plan

The PGA of Canada has launched a flexible payment program to support Apprentices continuing their Training Academy requirements and Class "A" members looking to pursue further professional development.

“We recognize that many members are under immense financial pressure right now,” says Chief Innovation Officer Matt Allen. “Our goal is to alleviate the immediate financial barrier to education so that Apprentices and Class “A” members are able to continue their professional journeys in a flexible and customizable manner."

Here’s how the deferred payment plan works:

Members are asked to make a down payment of $25 for asynchronous courses and $50 for live-instructed courses. Payment of the remaining course fees will not be required until December 1, 2020, and can be done incrementally or in full at any time leading up that date.

When you register for a course, the total applicable fee will populate in the ’Amount’ field. You can edit the amount you would like to pay upfront within this field as long as it is equal to or above the listed minimum payment (see image below).

PGA_of_CanadaAn invoice will be generated within your PGA of Canada member profile showing the outstanding amount, which can be paid in any frequency (e.g. weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.) through the same process prior to December 1.

Please note:

  • The existing Training Academy refund policy still applies
  • Deferred payment is available for all course registrations prior to July 1.

The PGA of Canada believes education lays the foundation for success and hope this solution offers you the opportunity to continue learning and growing as a PGA of Canada professional. If the aforementioned does not meet your needs, please contact the PGA of Canada Education team so they can try and find an alternative way to best support you.

PGA Championship of Canada Returns to Edmonton’s Royal

The PGA Championship of Canada presented by TaylorMade Golf Canada and adidas Golf returns to Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton July 6-10, for the fourth time in the event’s 99-year history. The last time it was there, “The King” Arnold Palmer took home the title.

“Royal Mayfair Golf Club’s rich heritage and pristine conditions make it the perfect venue for our association’s most prestigious championship,” said PGA of Canada President Mark Patterson. “We are delighted to see our top professionals return to such an iconic facility and thank Director of Golf Matt Johnson and the entire membership for sharing their club with us.”

Established in 1922, Royal Mayfair Golf Club remains one of the longest-standing private clubs in Edmonton. An impressive list of golfers have graced the fairways there, from LPGA TOUR players Lorena Ochoa and Lydia Ko (both CN Women’s Open champions) to golf legend Arnold Palmer, who won the PGA Championship of Canada in 1980—known then as the Labatt’s International Golf Classic.

“Our club is honoured to welcome back the PGA Championship of Canada presented by TaylorMade Golf Canada and adidas Golf,” said Johnson. “It’s pretty special to host this event on the 40th anniversary of Palmer winning at Royal Mayfair."

Last year’s winner Dustin Risdon from Calgary, Alta. bested Vancouver’s Oliver Tubb 3&1 to claim his second national PGA title. “This is one trophy in Canadian golf that I really wanted to win,” said Risdon. “If you look at the names on the trophy it’s amazing and now my name will be on there too for the rest of time.”

Play Ability Test Changes Coming into Effect in 2020

After two years of extensive research and feedback from members, boards, zones, Golf Canada, International PGA’s and the Association’s exit surveys, the PGA of Canada is announcing updates to the Play Ability Test (PAT) process effective January 1, 2020.

While maintaining the integrity of playing ability, these updates streamline the PAT process and address several key areas identified as barriers to joining the association. The PGA of Canada has addressed the below points with the new PAT process:

  • The new PAT process will be consistent across the country, including the cost, which has been made more affordable for all prospective members.
  • The new PAT process standardizes and simplifies the registration process for PAT’s; applicants will register centrally on pgaofcanada.com for all PAT attempts moving forward.
  • Eliminating the IN and OUT scores; the PAT will be conducted over one 18-hole round.
  • Separate PAT target scores for men, women, and seniors, backed by handicap data from Golf Canada.

NEW PAT Process
Step 1 - Register online at pgaofcanada.com - The cost is $325 plus tax, which includes your 1st PAT attempt and is valid for one year from the date of the registration. After a year, you must re-register as an applicant to register for and attempt at PAT.
Step 2 - Register online at pgaofcanada.com for all PAT’s - ($150 per attempt, PAT’s for 2020 to be posted online by April 1)

NEW PAT Exemption Process
Step 1 - Register online at pgaofcanada.com - at $325 plus tax
Step 2 - Submit your scores for a possible PAT Exemption (click here), using the online form at pgaofcanada.com (if successful, an additional fee of $25 plus tax applies).

Nine Alberta Pros Competing at PGA Championship of Canada

Good luck to the nine PGA of Alberta Professionals playing in the PGA Championship of Canada this week in Ontario! The PGA of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious Championship takes place on June 25-28 at Whistle Bear GC in Cambridge, Ontario with seventy-two of the Association’s best players looking to capture the 98th playing of the Championship.

Re-launched in 2011, the PGA Championship of Canada was contested strictly as a match play event through 2014 with players from the four brackets—Stan Leonard, George Knudson, Al Balding and Moe Norman—looking to advance through the six rounds to capture the P.D. Ross Trophy. However, the 2015 Championship at Cabot Links saw a format change, with 64 top-ranked players from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings playing two rounds of stroke play. The top-16 players from the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event filled out the four match play brackets with the eventual champion winning four match play rounds.

Dustin Risdon Wins PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf

Dustin Risdon put the hammer down Thursday at Lora Bay Golf Club, winning the PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf in astonishing fashion. The 35-year-old’s three-day total of 18-under-par (67-67-64) was 11-shots better than his nearest competitors, Mike Belbin, Thomas Keddy and Bryn Parry. “All week I had the same goal of getting to 18-under-par,” Risdon said. “I had to make three birdies coming home to get to the number and I did, so that’s pretty awesome.” Risdon’s final round 8-under-par 64 included nine birdies and a bogey—his first and only of the championship—at No. 11.

Calgary Golf Professional caps off outstanding Tournament season

Ridiculous. How else do you explain the season that Dustin Risdon has had on the PGA of Alberta Tour? Including last week’s Sunice Tour Championship at Sundre GC— which he won by a staggering eight shots while shooting a course record 64 in the final round — Risdon has taken seven of the eight PGA of Alberta events he entered. In his only loss he finished second — at Calgary’s Heritage Pointe in brutal conditions. The runaway Order of Merit leader and a cinch to win Player of the Year, Risdon was as self-effacing as usual when describing his season that saw him win two professional series’ events, the Pro-Junior, a Players Tour event and three championships. After caddying at Shaw Charity Classic, Calgary Professional Dustin Risdon will tee it up at PGA of Alberta Tour Championsip

He’s admittedly more passionate now about teaching than swinging his own sticks. For local instructor Dustin Risdon, that short-term gig — lugging the weaponry for Spain’s Miguel Angel Martin during the 2016 Shaw Charity Classic — was all about gaining knowledge to share with his students. After donning a caddie bib last week, Risdon should be wearing a bullseye Tuesday-Wednesday at the PGA of Alberta’s Sunice Tour Championship at Sundre Golf Club. “Obviously, everything has gone my way,” said Risdon, who has a sparkling scoring average of 67.11 in eight PGA of Alberta get-togethers this season. “I didn’t plan on playing this well. But I got the Assistants Championship and the PGA Championship, so I guess this would be the last one on the list.” Click here to read the full article by Wes Gilbertson – Calgary Sun.

Fort McMurray Golf Club down, but not out

In the wake of ‘the beast’, their clubhouse, halfway hut and a sizeable majority of their carts are no more; fenced off and covered in a healthy dose of tackfire. That has yet to impede their plan to reopen July 1, with their nine-hole expansion pushed back to a tentative date of Aug. 1. Overseeing the revitalization, course superintendent Jeff Hacior and his staff have worked 10-16 hour days in order to get the course back to its original condition, if not a little bit better. “I don’t think it’ll be hard,” said Hacior. “It’ll just take some time. “Once this is all said and done, the place is going to be better than it ever was.” Click here to read the full article written by Robert Murray, Fort McMurray Today

Calgarian shoots stellar score at PGA of Alberta Junior Masters … and she's 14!

Calgary’s Annabelle Ackroyd needed only 68 strokes to complete a spin of the Links Course at Wolf Creek Resort during the PGA of Alberta’s Junior Masters. That terrific tally is even more impressive when you consider this stat — Ackroyd is 14 years old. “We’ve had some really good young players come through here, and they’re 17 or 18 years old and shooting that kind of score,” marvelled Ryan Vold, the director of golf at Wolf Creek, a top-notch 36-hole hangout near Ponoka that hosts both the Junior Masters and the McLennan Ross Junior Tour Championship. “But at her age, to shoot that, I thought it was quite a feat.” Click here to read the full article written by Wes Gilbertson, Calgary Herald.

Calgary-area golf courses mark earliest opening day on record

It’s the earliest that anybody in Calgary’s golf industry can recall cutting the first pins for a new season. "The courses are in considerably better shape this year than even last year, because it’s been so dry and the snow is gone and it’s just looking really good,” said Slade King, the chief operating officer for Play Golf Calgary. It’s no secret Calgary is a golf-crazy city, and that was oh-so-obvious again Tuesday as winter-weary divot-diggers rushed to book weekend tee-times. Click here for the full story.

Golf Tip: How to be a better putter

To ensure both a good putting stroke and a square putter blade, Royal Mayfair’s Jeremy Lavallee uses a double gate drill. Lavallee starts by putting down two golf tees that are just wider than the putter blade itself. Then he will hit a few putts to see how much the putt is breaking. At the apex of the break — or about half way through the putt — he will put down two more tees a few inches apart. Click here to read the full tip.

D'Arcy Ranch Alberta's own quiet frontier

From horse-play to course-play — that’s the history of D’Arcy Ranch Golf Club. D’Arcy Ranch was once the site of a racetrack and quarter-horse operation, and the late Jerry D’Arcy — the founder of the course — is a past president of the Calgary Stampede. “It’s 15 minutes south of Calgary now, but you pull in, and you don’t hear cars buzzing around. You really don’t hear anything,” said longtime Head Professional Tim Watt. “You have the mountains in the backdrop. It’s quiet. It’s scenic. You have the deer running around and the coyotes running around. Click here to read the full story by Wes Gilbertson, Calgary Sun.

In teaching the beginning golfer, having established the proper grip, stance, posture and positioning of the ball, one can proceed with the motion of the swing itself and to convince the student to swing the clubhead, rather than slug or swipe at the ball.
