Born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Bill Penny started playing the game he loves at the age of 10 at the Lynbrooke Golf Club. His passion for golf continued to play a strong role throughout his teens, at times winning out over hockey.
Following high school, Bill elected to pursue his love for hockey, and accepted a scholarship to the University of North Dakota. Returning to Canada following his university days, Bill chose golf as a profession and joined the CPGA in 1970.
As a golf professional, Bill got his first taste for World Class Golf Facilities working at the Royal Kaanapali Golf Course in Maui. He then returned to the Victoria area where at twenty-five, he began his career as a Head Professional, spending nine years at the Glen Meadows Golf & Country Club. During his time in Victoria, Bill was successfully elected to the British Columbia PGA Board of Directors, and served as President of the Association for two years in the early eighties.
In 1983, Bill made the move to Edmonton, accepting responsibility for the next 16 years of his life as Head Professional at the Edmonton Country Club. During this time Bill also established an International Golf School in Thailand, including Golf Education in the Thai Department of Education.
Bill’s dedication to the game has helped him succeed at establishing World renowned golf facilities in Alberta. When he left the Edmonton Country Club, he decided to move into the Executive Professional category of Membership within the CPGA, and helped set up operations at the newly built Stewart Creek Golf Course in Canmore, Alberta. This venture vaulted Bill’s career to new heights, and once complete, he made the move to a similar situation at the Speargrass Golf Course in Carseland, just east of Calgary’s city limits. Once up an running, he and wife Marnie decided to move back up to Edmonton, where he accepted the top job at one of the province’s most prestigious facilities, the Northern Bear. In 2008 Bill accepted the role as Pro/Manager at the Camrose golf course,and retired in 2017.
Through his continuing education, Bill earned the status of Master Professional in 2003, an accomplishment very few in the CPGA have achieved. Basing his Thesis on his experiences throughout a great career, ‘Building and Managing a World Class Golf Facility’ is truly an interesting read for many aspiring professionals and everyday golfers alike. Bill has positioned himself as a true leader in the industry, well versed and knowledgeable in all aspects of the game and business of golf.
In 1993, Bill was awarded the Alberta PGA Club Professional of the Year Award, an honour awarded to him and voted on by his industry peers.Bill was the head coach for the UofA Augustana college men’s and ladies golf teams from2015-2020,awarded the ACAC conference coach of the year in 2015 and selected the Canadian College Coach of the year also in 2015.
